Perceptions of Ink

by JD DeHart

Does it matter where the page
appears in the stack, or the artful
rendering of the letters, whether
printed font or hand-written frame?
Does the question at the beginning,
acting as hook, always work,
or a deluge of distracting adjectives,
perhaps a semicolon or two?
The poet must inevitably scratch
their metaphoric chin and ask:
Is the appraisal of the work all relative,
to the time, the dinner before,
the amount of wine consumed
before propping up feet for a reading?
